It’s been quite the adventure dealing with COVID-19 on top of site issues due to my host migrating files months ago. My Christian patience is exhausted.
Due to all that, and California’s obnoxious AB5 law that has killed all freelancing in the state and is punishing even out-of-state clients with massive “per incident” fines if they engage us, much steam is escaping from my ears. The fines range from $5,000 to $25,000 and no small or medium business can afford that or the risk of using a freelancer. Therefore we have no work and no income! Neither can businesses afford to hire a full-time employee during or after the pandemic!
The bill was passed, most likely unread, with no comprehension of how business actually works and no comprehension that most freelancers either choose or have to choose their lifestyle because they need the freedoms, often to care for a very sick relative or to manage their own health issues. Furthermore, they don’t need the health insurance benefit, as they get it through a spouse or partner’s employment or they earn enough to pay for their own, even if it’s through a health exchange marketplace.
Whatever happened to being able to choose your own employment? Those who need the benefits of full-time employment should be able to have the protection of being hired full-time. The rest of us take days off whenever we want to and work the hours we choose, often fitting those hours in around university or vocational school obligations, or our kids’ school plays. Whatever happened to seniors being able to supplement their meager social security payments? It is a power- and money-grab by politicians and labor unions. Read more at Freelancers Against AB5.
Even more infuriating is that politicians and labor unions are trying to take the ban national. Freelancing would be forbidden in every state in the Union, and probably territories as well. The House has already passed the ProACT legislation. Let us hope the Senate doesn’t take it up, let alone pass it. If it gets signed into law by our volatile President, we are all screwed. It will be the end of entrepreneurship in the United States.
These two old Mother Goose rhymes describe what I think of what’s happening in our nation right now! Three-year-old politicians throwing tantrums while playing in a sandbox, oblivious to the world around them. Both of these are from Project Gutenberg. org (not the WordPress version by that name).
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall;
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again.
The lion and the unicorn
Were fighting for the crown.
The lion beat the unicorn
All about the town.
Some gave them white bread,
And some gave them brown;
Some gave them plum-cake,
And sent them out of town.
